HIFU in Korea: The Honest Tier List

In the UK, Australia and Singapore it's all called "HIFU". In Korea that one word covers a ₩150,000 maintenance session and a ₩2,500,000 flagship lift — and clinics won't always volunteer which one you're buying.

Short answer: "HIFU" (high-intensity focused ultrasound) in Korea spans three tiers: genuine Ultherapy (₩900k–2.5M, visualization, strongest evidence — guide), Korean premium HIFU like Shurink Universe or Doublo Gold (₩300k–600k), and event-priced basic HIFU (₩150k–300k). All are real focused ultrasound; depth precision, evidence, and price differ. If a quote says "Ulthera" at Shurink money, it's a tier mix-up — the most common trap in Korean lifting menus.

How Koreans actually use HIFU

Here's the part international guides skip: for many Koreans, HIFU is routine maintenance, not an event. A Shurink session once or twice a year from the 30s is a standard part of the "dongan" playbook — cheap, fast, no downtime. Ultherapy is what people step up to when sagging is visible and they want one strong, documented lift. Neither choice is wrong; paying Ultherapy money for a basic device is.

How to keep a quote honest

Device by name? "HIFU lifting" is a category, not a device. Ask exactly which machine.
Ultherapy? See the screen. Genuine Ultherapy shows live ultrasound of your tissue layers. No screen, no Ultherapy.
Lines/shots in writing? Both Ultherapy and Korean HIFU are priced by count — get the number.
Sane price for the tier? Check against the table above; a tier-price mismatch is your answer.

HIFU in Korea — FAQ

How much is HIFU in Korea?

Depends entirely on the device. Korean HIFU (Shurink, Doublo) runs 150,000-600,000 KRW ($110-445) per session in Seoul. Genuine Ultherapy runs 900,000-2,500,000 KRW ($665-1,850) by line count. Both are 'HIFU' - they are not the same product.

Is Korean HIFU (Shurink) as good as Ultherapy?

Shurink and similar Korean devices deliver real focused ultrasound at a fraction of the price, and many Koreans maintain with them 1-2 times a year. Ultherapy adds ultrasound visualization (the operator sees the layer being treated) and is the device with the strongest lift evidence. Budget maintenance vs one stronger evidence-backed session is the real trade-off.

Why was my Seoul HIFU quote so cheap?

A very cheap 'Ulthera' or 'HIFU lifting' quote is almost always a Korean HIFU device, not genuine Ultherapy. That can still be a fair deal - but only if it is priced as what it is. Ask the device name and, for Ultherapy, to see the see-through ultrasound screen.

Is HIFU painful and is there downtime?

Expect deep aching heat during treatment (numbing and adjustable settings help) and possible tenderness or mild swelling for days. There is no visible downtime for most people - makeup and flights the next day are fine. Results build over 2-3 months.

What is the median HIFU price in Seoul as of September 2026?

As of September 2026 the three HIFU tiers in Seoul are advertised as follows: genuine Ultherapy ₩900,000–₩2,500,000 for the face (midpoint about ₩1,700,000), Korean premium HIFU such as Shurink Universe or Doublo Gold ₩300,000–₩600,000, and event-priced basic HIFU ₩150,000–₩300,000. The figures are compiled from publicly advertised clinic pricing, not from quotes collected from clinics.

Ultherapy is worth separating from "HIFU" as a category, and the regulatory record is the cleanest way to do it. The Ulthera System did not clear as a copy of an existing device: in September 2009 the FDA granted it a De Novo classification (DEN080006), creating the device category "focused ultrasound for tissue heat or mechanical cellular disruption" under 21 CFR 878.4590, product code OHV. Every later Ulthera clearance — through K260618, decided 21 May 2026 — runs off that classification. Other ultrasound lifting devices sold in Korea are separate products with their own approvals from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. So "HIFU" on a price board tells you the physical principle, not the machine. If the price matters to you, the machine name is the question to ask.
