Ulthera in Gangnam: Lifting, Explained
The ultrasound lift that reaches where creams and RF can't — and how to tell a real Ulthera session from a cheaper HIFU substitute.
What Ulthera actually does
Ulthera uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualization — the operator can see the tissue layers on screen and place energy precisely at set depths (typically 4.5mm, 3.0mm, 1.5mm). The deepest depth reaches the SMAS, the fibromuscular layer that surgeons tighten in a facelift. Heating it creates tiny coagulation points that contract and then stimulate a lifting, tightening response over the following weeks.
Because it's the only HIFU device FDA-cleared to claim a lift, 'Ulthera' is often used loosely to mean any HIFU. It isn't — a genuine Ulthera session and a budget HIFU (e.g. Shurink, Doublo) are different price and depth stories. The price driver here is the line/shot count.
Ulthera vs. Thermage vs. Shurink
Ulthera lifts the deep scaffold. Thermage tightens the surface envelope. Shurink is a more affordable HIFU alternative.
Ulthera (HIFU): deep lifting of sagging structure — jowls, jawline, brow. Thermage (RF): broad skin tightening and texture — see our Thermage guide. Shurink / other HIFU: similar principle to Ulthera at a lower price point, often with more shots for the money but less depth precision. If budget matters, ask the clinic to explain honestly which device they're using and why — 'Ulthera' on the banner sometimes means a cheaper HIFU in the room.
Who it suits — and who should wait
Good fit: early-to-moderate sagging (mid-30s and up), softening jawline and jowls, people who want lifting without surgery or downtime. Less ideal alone: very thin faces where lifting can look gaunt (volume/filler may come first), or severe sagging that a HIFU can only partially address (threads or surgery territory). Ulthera repositions and firms — it doesn't replace lost volume.

Does Ulthera hurt?
It's felt as brief deep, hot pinpricks — strongest at the deepest (4.5mm) setting over bone. Numbing cream and sometimes a mild painkiller are used. Energy is adjustable, so speak up; too little energy for comfort, though, means too little result.
How long do results last?
Usually 1–1.5 years. The lift builds over 2–3 months as collagen remodels, so judge the outcome at the 8–12 week mark, not immediately after.
Is 'Ulthera' always real Ulthera?
No — 'HIFU lifting' and 'Ulthera' are often used interchangeably in ads, but budget clinics may run a cheaper HIFU device. Ask directly which device and how many lines. An honest answer is itself a good sign.
Ulthera or Thermage?
Different jobs. Ulthera lifts sagging structure; Thermage tightens and refines skin. Over 40, the two are frequently combined. A consultation that diagnoses which you need — rather than selling both — is the one to trust.
